Frequently asked questions.
“You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin — therapy is a place to explore, understand, and grow at your own pace. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, please reach out — I’ll be happy to help.”
Who can have therapy?
Counselling can be beneficial for people of all ages, genders and backgrounds who are struggling with various challenges in life.
Anyone who is facing emotional, psychological or behavioral issues can seek counselling to receive professional support and guidance.
What happens in the first session?
In our first session, we’ll spend time getting to know each other and exploring what brought you to therapy. You’ll have the opportunity to share any concerns, challenges, or goals you may have. The first session is also a chance to talk about practical details, such as session structure, frequency, and what works best for you, so we can create a plan that feels safe and manageable.
How long is a session, and how often should I attend?
Standard sessions are 50-60 minutes. The length of therapy depends on your goals and progress. Some people benefit from short-term support, while others find ongoing sessions helpful.
I’ve never been to therapy before. What if I don’t know what to say?
That’s perfectly okay. Many people feel unsure at first. My role is to listen, guide, and help you feel comfortable exploring what matters to you.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed in sessions is confidential, in line with professional and legal standards. The only exceptions are if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others.
How do I book a session?
You can contact me directly via the contact form here on my website, or through my email address to arrange an initial session. I offer both in-person sessions in Cork and secure online sessions, giving you the flexibility to access therapy in a way that suits your needs.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes, I provide secure online sessions, allowing you to access therapy from the comfort of your own home while still receiving professional, personalized support.
What if I don’t feel better right away?
Therapy is a process, and progress often comes gradually. I will support you at a pace that feels manageable, helping you explore challenges, build on your strengths, and develop tools to support your wellbeing.
What issues do you work with?
I support people experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, illness, relationship difficulties, abuse and life challenges. I also work with adolescents (18+) and adults who may be experiencing self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Whatever your situation, I aim to provide a space where you can be heard, reflect, and start finding ways forward.
Can I switch between online and in-person sessions?
Yes, it is possible to switch between online and in-person sessions providing it is discussed and arranged before our appointment date.
Do you work with children or adolescents?
I currently work with adolescents aged 18 and over, as well as adults. I hope to begin offering services for children in the near future.
Do you offer a reduced rate or sliding scale?
I believe counselling should be accessible to everyone. For those on low incomes, I offer a limited number of low-cost sessions at a reduced fee. These sessions last 50-60 minutes and provide the same level of care and support as my standard service. To keep this service fair and available, I do ask for proof of low income when applying (such as benefit documentation, student status, or pay slips).
What happens if I need to cancel a session?
I value the commitment you make to your therapy and understand that sometimes life’s unexpected events can interfere with plans.
Your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you. A cancellation policy for therapy requires clients to give a minimum amount of notice, typically 48 hours, to change or cancel an appointment, or you may be charged the full session fee. This policy helps cover the costs of the reserved space and allows me to continue offering consistent support to all clients and to keep the practice running sustainably.
If something urgent or unavoidable comes up, please don’t hesitate to contact me, I’ll always do my best to respond with flexibility and understanding.
Are sessions covered by health insurance (e.g. Laya Healthcare, VHI)?
At present, I’m not registered with Laya Healthcare, so sessions cannot be claimed through them. It’s worth checking with other insurers to see if they would approve sessions.
Many clients still choose to attend privately, as it allows for greater flexibility and consistency — with no limit on the number of sessions and no need for a GP referral.
